Aston University is perfect if you like living in the centre of a large city and want to study ‘real world’ subjects with plenty of opportunity to get ‘hands on experience – including through a placement year in industry or a degree apprenticeship.
The University is situated in the centre of Birmingham (one of the UK’s largest cities).
It was founded as Birmingham Municipal Technical School in 1895 and became a University in 1966.
Aston University was the first university to offer sandwich years or year out placements in industry as part of its course and has the highest percentage of students of any UK university taking a placement year (around 70% of its students take this option).
Aston also provides the Degree Apprenticeship programme for CGI (Canadian Global Information Company) which leads to a BSc in digital and Technology Solutions. The work-based part of this degree apprenticeship will generally be at CGI offices in either Birmingham, London, Reading or Leatherhead. The course lasts three years and entrants are required to have at least 120 UCAS points.
It has a strong focus on industry links and Science and Engineering subjects. It has also recently opened the Aston Medical School (which takes PhD and MSc students and has recently enrolled its first undergraduate medical students.
